The 2017 All-Star Awards take place tonight in Dublin, and Waterford’s star forward Austin Gleeson will be in attendance. The Mount Sion man was nominated once again this year, after bagging the simultaneous titles of Hurler of the Year and Young Player of the Year at the 2016 event. An honour he found difficult to handle.

After an exceptional season of hurling, Austin and the Waterford team suffered a loss to Galway in this year’s epic All-Ireland senior hurling final. However, his skill is still recognised as one of the best in the country for 2017.

Since September Austin has been back working, training and looking forward to getting back on the pitch with his Deise teammates. We caught up with him ahead of tonight’s event to talk sport, style and what his one guilty pleasure is.

How has it been being Hurler of the Year?

“To be honest it has been tough being Hurler of the Year from 2016. I’ve put a lot of pressure on myself in 2017 to try get back to that standard and I haven’t unfortunately. Thankfully my team mates have shown what they are capable of, but we were unlucky in the All-Ireland Final.”

How does it feel to be nominated for an All-Star again this year?

“It’s a great feeling to be nominated again, there are many of us nominated and it is a good night to get to know all the rest of the players at the event.”

What do you most look forward to about the night?

“I look forward to seeing all the players from every county around Ireland in both codes all coming together to celebrate the year.”

Do you enjoy dressing up for the event?

“Yes, I do enjoy dressing up for the occasion as it is not very often I get to be suited and booted!”

Do you have an interest in style yourself? What do you like to wear off the pitch?

“I wouldn’t overly have an interest in style to be honest, off the pitch I’m very laid-back tracksuit and hoodie type of guy.”

Who is the most/least stylish player in the Waterford camp?

“The most stylish person on the Waterford team would have to be Shane Fives, he’s always ready with his style. I’d say he is even stylish when he is out with the pigs on the farm!

“The least stylish on the team would be Stephen O’Keeffe, I’ve seen him wear some combinations throughout the last few years!”

How has life been since the All-Ireland final? Busy?

“Since the All-Ireland final, life has been tipping away, nothing too busy but not to bored; the right amount of work I think.”

What keeps you motivated in GAA?

“What keeps me motivated in the GAA is simply how much I LOVE the game and how much our team wants to win the Liam McCarthy.”

Favourite/least favourite gym exercise?

“Favourite exercise in the gym is definitely the warm down! My least favourite exercise is 100% Pull ups- I cannot do them!”

Ultimate food guilty pleasure?

“My ultimate guilty food pleasure is cookies with a cup of tea, once the packet opens its hard to stop.”

When you get some down time, what do you like to do to relax?

“I simply just like to relax with my friends in front of the TV and have a chat about anything and everything.”

What have you been watching on Netflix recently?

“My most recent thing I watched on Netflix was the film Kidnap, would definitely recommend it. It’s a very good film.”

Quote that you live by?

“F.E.A.R has two meanings:  Forget Everything And Run OR Face Everything And Rise. The choice is yours.”
