Mum of two, Suzanne Quinn of The Yoga Lounge in Raheny, has been teaching yoga for almost 15 years. We caught up with her to find out everything there is to know about yoga – whether you’re a beginner, or you’ve fancied getting into yoga instructing. Like many of us, Suzanne dabbled in a bit of yoga here and there, but it took her a while to get into the flow of it. “I actually tried some yoga classes with some friends back in my late teens, but it was only when I got into my mid-20s, I realised how much I loved it. The benefits range from giving you time to relax, helping with anxiety and stress, while also building strength and flexibility.”
While many of us may have done some online classes over the past couple of months, going to an actual yoga class in a studio can be daunting to say the least, with many people worrying they’re not flexible enough to go a full class. Suzanne’s best advice? “Come with an open mind! Be kind to yourself, listen to your body, and try lots of classes and styles to see what one you like best. We do yoga to become more flexible, so you don’t have to be flexible to come along. It’s absolutely for everyone!”
But what do I even wear?! “One of the most common questions I get asked is what do I wear? Or what should I bring to a yoga class? Wear what you’re most comfortable in. So, you’ve been doing yoga for a while, and you’re ready to share your skills with the world. But just how do I go about becoming a yoga instructor? “First off, I’d like to say, if you want to turn your passion into your career, make sure you’ve really thought about it. Ireland has a lot more yoga teachers, compared to when I trained back in 2005, so it’s a competitive field. Sometimes people can find it’s more of a chore than a pastime. But if this doesn’t put you off – then go for it! It’s an incredibly rewarding career and if you love what you do, then it never feels like work.”
