Cannes do: lessons in summer formal wear from the stars

If you’re looking for a glitzy event to steal some inspiration for a black tie wedding or debs, it doesn’t really get much better than the Cannes Film Festival.

Unlike the Oscars or Grammys that take place much earlier in the year, Cannes is buzzing with fresh, summery looks. And because the festival hosts both day and night-time red carpet affairs, you’ll see glam maxi dresses, more casual day dresses and this season’s hottest sandals and accessories.

With all of those nuptials and debs coming up, I have decided to show you how you can recreate the Cannes look without the big spend right here at Littlewoods Ireland.

Emma’s Stone-cold grey gown

Emma Stone was in town for the ‘Irrational Man‘ premiere, pictured above with fellow actress Parker Posey and the director Woody Allen.

Everyone’s favourite funny girl kept her look classic with a grey maxi, similar to this Little Mistress One Shoulder Maxi. Add some height with these Bow Detail Platform Shoes and make your lips pop like a movie star’s with this L’Oréal Lipstick – JLo’s Red.

For jewellery, Emma wore a diamond choker, surely getting the idea from Miriam on Primetime. We love this Jewel Layered Choker, which will lift even the plainest of maxi dresses into red carpet realms.

What we wish Natalie Portman had worn

I love Natalie, but bless her; she must have been in such a rush to Cannes she accidentally packed an old costume she had left over from The Black Swan.

Not content with puffy lace sleeves and jewel daisy embellishment, she even went see-through. Natalie, flashing your knickers was all well and good when they’re under a tutu in the name of art, but not in broad daylight at what is probably the film world’s chicest event in the planet’s chicest city!

So below, find what we wish Nat’s Cannes look was. This Nouchka Halter Maxi Dress is floor-length and also not see-through. The halter neck would have been much more flattering on her tiny frame than the puffy sleeves, and the slit would still have allowed her to flash a little leg in a more classic way than simply flashing her knickers.

Wear with these Carvela T-bar Sandals and you’ll have a great (and appropriate!) debs look. Finish the look off with some ritzy sparkle by adding these Rose Gold Earrings from Lola and Grace.

Salma Hayek’s glamorous frills

Hispanic hottie Salma Hayek was in Cannes for the premiere of the fantasy flick ‘Tale of Tales’ where she led the cast as the ‘Queen of Longtrellis’.

The Mexican actress brought some flamenco frills to the French affair in a black and gold embroidered silk gown from pre-SS13 Alexander McQueen, with a Diamond Bridge box clutch also from the designer.

For a more affordable version of her look than vintage McQueen, try this South Frill Bandeau Maxi Dress with these Shoe Box Gina Platform Sandals.

Accessorise like Salma with these gorgeous Lipsy Drop Earrings and this Carvela hard lace clutch. And before you step out the door, add some serious volume to your locks with this Remington Keratin Therapy Tongs. This is a great look for a wedding abroad; dressy, but not too dressy.
