The year’s most fashionable event took place last month in California. No, Paris Fashion Week didn’t relocate Stateside – and this event didn’t even have a runway! Instead, some of the world’s hottest models, musicians and actresses buddied up and went to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Imagine Electric Picnic, only three hours from Los Angeles, where festival goers experience temperatures of up to 41 °C.
It’s common at the festival to spot the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Sarah Hyland and Beyoncé wandering around in their hippied-up haute couture complete with sundresses and sandals, (not forgetting the floral crown). The styles these ladies decide to post up on Instagram over the two weekends in April, will set the tone for girls all over the world for the next few months. Here’s what’s trending as a result of this year’s Coachella festival.
Crochet Capes & Ponchos
You might have once thought that crochet had no business in society other than covering furniture in your grandparents’ house, but at this year’s Coachella, crochet was a hot commodity in cape form. Up there with waffles and chocolate, crochet is one of Belgium’s finest exports and instantly gives your wardrobe a vintage, eclectic look. Try this Resort Crochet Cape Cover Up over a bikini or tank top while lounging by the pool this summer. Don’t forget the South Crochet Festival Poncho and the So Fabulous Crochet Stitch Tassle Hem Waistcoat, — both are perfect for layering on over a basic top and jeans year-round.
Puffy Bardot Sleeves
These off-the-shoulder, 1970s-looking tops and dresses were another front-runner at this year’s festival. Reality star turned supermodel turned temporary hippy Kendall Jenner wore a white Bardot crop top with a pair of paisley pattern flares. If you’re not as brave as Kendall, try wearing one of these South Frill Bardot Tops with a pair of jeans. Kendall, with her sister Kylie, was one of the first VIPs to run through the Coachella gates this year, making full use of the empty polo field venue before it filled to capacity.
This cute South Print Bardot Dress is more tailored and is a good way of incorporating the trend into your workwear. And if you’re lucky enough to be hitting the beach of a festival yourself this summer, try this Michelle Keegan Lace Bardot Playsuit.
And of course no Coachella fashion recap would be complete without the mention of denim short-shorts. These Levi’s 501 Boomtown Shorts are a classic and will work with any top you have in your wardrobe. For something a little more quirky and ’90s, I love these Love Label Paris Short Ripped Dungarees. To add a pop of colour, try these South Supersoft Shorts which are great for wearing with a bikini top and Body Chain – also a major festival trend this year.
