It’s no secret that Eastender’s favourite, Sean Slater is set to make his return to Albert Square. Having not appeared in 10 years, it seems Sean is back for a heartbreaking storyline. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, if you hate spoilers, look away now!
While Sean’s return is welcomed by most it seems Jean Slater, Sean’s mum, is working through her own issues. Jean, played by Gillian Wright, is facing an ovarian cancer diagnosis. On top of this, Jean suffers from bipolar disorder, so the diagnosis will cause her some serious emotional turmoil.
EastEnders is working closely with Macmillan Cancer Support on the storyline which will follow Jean as she comes to terms with her diagnosis. While writer Kate Oates says “Jean’s diagnosis will impact every aspect of her life, including her family, her friendship groups and her mental health, and I know an actor of Gillian’s calibre will approach the story with great truth and depth.
“The Slaters are an amazing ensemble family, full of complex and well-drawn characters, and this story is a completely fresh subject for them to tackle,” Kate added.
While Jean’s physical and emotional health begins to deteriorate, there certainly won’t be smiles all round for Sean’s return, however there will be moments of light relief when Mo Slater is forced to find a flatmate, and shacks up with a familiar face – who’s yet to be revealed, but we can’t wait!
