We sat down with All-Star GAA player and sharp dresser, Bernard Brogan, to see what has influenced his style and what he likes to wear off the pitch.
You’re known for your style Bernard, what influences you when it comes to style?
Fit, comfort and what suits me are huge factors. My life is busy, and although I don’t have too much time to focus on style I know what I like, what suits me and what I’m happy to wear. When I shop it’s usually for jeans and shirts that are fitted, that I can wear casually but also for work meetings – and I kind of take that approach with most items of clothing. Between work, home and the pitch I’m constantly on the go so it’s important that I have pieces that I can mix and match.
What’s your go to look at the weekend?
I would say contemporary and casual – I like to keep it fairly simple. During the summer I wear a lot of basics like fitted shirts, chinos, or round neck t-shirts because they’re easy and comfortable. I wear a lot of suits and shirts for work so a fitted two piece, along with a tidy shirt is important – I am out a lot at meetings so first impressions and looking professional is important when I am trying to drive business for Legacy or Peptalk. Overall, I would say my look is relaxed and very much comfortable.
Do you think your style has evolved over the last few years?
Yes, as I’ve grown older – and with influence from my wife – my style has 100% changed. I’m conscious that even my basics, such as good tees and chinos, are important to me now because you can wear them with everything – for work, events and the weekend. I wore a lot of active wear when I was younger and everything was baggy and loose fitting. Although you’ll still see me in active wear, it’s much smarter and I’d feel comfortable heading out in it – not just lounging around house.
Who has given you the best style advice?
My wife – she’s seriously whipped me into shape and gives my wardrobe a good clear out every so often! What’s really worked for me over the years is getting some good basics and knowing what works for you. Not everyone suits a certain cut of trouser or blazer so find out what suits you – and if in doubt just ask your better half!
