It’s now March, and the GAA and Camogie League seasons are well underway. Players are keeping their fitness and nutrition on point at this time of year while training, and coming up against some of their toughest opponents.
Keeping the diet clean, packed full of protein, good fats and carbohydrates is key to players’ performance on the pitch. Fuelling their bodies for the Leagues matches, and in preparation for the Championship season is of high importance. However, we all have our vices….
We spoke to a number of hurlers and camogie players, and they let us know what their ultimate cheat meal is, when the time comes that they can allow themselves a little leeway in the food department.
The talented Waterford man is a biscuit fan, and it’s all or nothing when it comes to cookies!
“My ultimate guilty food pleasure is cookies with a cup of tea, once the packet opens its hard to stop.”
Brianna, another star player who represents the Deise on the field, is a major chocolate fan.
“Eating an entire jar of Nutella with a spoon!”
On his cheat days, this Dublin hurler likes to keep some vegetables in there…along with dough and cheese!
Jackie is more of a savoury fan when it comes to his cheat meal.
“A white chicken fillet roll with cheese!”
Another Kilkenny player, Michelle likes to enjoy baked goods when she gets the chance to veer off her diet…well, sort of?
“Butter cream icing. I once made a batch for myself, and just ate all the icing- no cake!”
The Meath woman keeps it simple, but delicious!
“Chicken goujons– definitely!”
This Tipperary dual player likes to keep her cheat meal homemade.
It was difficult to pick a favourite in Clare’s Orlaith Duggan’s case, but she went with this Italian classic.
“Ohhh that’s tough. I love lasagne.”
Similar to David, Padraic enjoys pizza for his cheat meal.
“I’d have to say Apache pizza.”
There’s a round shaped theme appearing here…
“Hmmm I’ll go with pizza.”
This Wexford camogie player has a much more specific choice, and it is the ultimate cheat meal. She knows how to do it right.
“Cheese taco bacon!”
Last but not least, former Dublin player Sarah O’Donovan’s choice and combination should be applauded.
“A whole garlic bread baguette and a bottle of coke as a snack….”
