‘Game of the Year’ from the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship

With so many brilliant games, it was hard to choose from!

It was a cracker

This year, the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the gift that kept on giving. A restructuring in the hurling format resulted in more matches being played, which lead to heaps more #StyleOfPlay action!

Throughout the summer, matches were played week after week – every hurling fan’s dream! Though, there were some matches that were just absolute crackers! The type of games that had us watching through our fingers and thinking, ‘I can’t bear to watch this!’

When Limerick and Kilkenny clashed in Thurles during the Quarter-Final stages of the Championship, it had us all on the edge of our seats. It was same again with Limerick when they progressed into the Semi-Final and took on Cork. A thrilling 70 minutes that had to be pushed to extra-time, it was ultimately a Limerick victory.

But there was one game that stood out amongst the rest.

Clare v Galway – All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-Final (drawn game)

Clare entered this game viewed as the underdogs and they proved themselves to be anything but. Galway stormed ahead with the lead, but Clare made the effective move of playing Colm Galvin as a sweeper and this began to turn the game on its head.

The two sides battled it out as nothing could separate them. We saw some excellent moments of hurling, like when Galway applied pressure, Clare’s key man Peter Duggan still managed a wonderful point.

20 minutes of the extra time were played, and it was tooth and nail the whole way. Jason McCarthy whacked an equalizing point for Clare, which was enough to call this match a draw and force it to a replay. What a game!
