There’s no denying the arrival of summer when the music festivals start kicking off around Ireland.
While I’m partial to the odd tune, tipple and a bit of mud, I really love the summer music festivals for the fashion inspiration. Blame the day job.
Two of my festival favourites are Florence Welsh and Imelda May. Over the years, Florence has dazzled us with vintage maxi dresses and quirky sandals, so I for one can’t wait to see what she wears on the main stage at this year’s Electric Picnic.
Here are some of the other stylish ladies gracing stages all over Ireland this summer and how you can steal their style.
The British songstress returns to Irish shores this summer (do you remember her playing a DJ set in the Wright Venue Swords? Either do we). This time she’ll be performing at Live at the Marquee, Cork and tickets are already sold out.
Ellie has shown she can rock a number of all-rounder styles, so where do I even start when trying to copy her fashion sense? This blonde loves black leather – pants and jackets – but she’s equally happy to dig out the sequins and crop tops for partying.
In particular, Ellie has shown us how to wear sequins in an edgy way without going overboard. Copy her tough-but-sparkly look at a festival this summer with these Shoe Box Biker Boots, sequin shorts and simple black cami top. Bring a leather biker jacket too for when the sun/rain goes/comes down.
Queen of modern-day eclectic style, Florence Welch will be taking the stage at Electric Picnic this summer. Her soul-shaking vocals, thundering beats and infectious enthusiasm always wins the crowd over and makes for a brilliant live show. In anticipation, I’ve been looking for some white, floaty ensembles that reference Florence’s signature style but stops short of all-out rock star because, well, I’m happy to leave the gold shorts to her and Kylie. I do love how she combines white lace and sparkles when she goes out, so with this in mind, my nod to Florence’s fashion at the Picnic is a playsuit.
I’ve picked two above – one for that lacey, boho-luxe look that was all over Coachella, and a sequin version for the nights of glitter body paint and dance tents. Bare legs never seem as daunting when your wellies are knee-high and your socks are pulled even higher, but if you don’t fancy bare legs (it is, after all, still a field in Laois) then wear tights underneath. A cross-body bag is still a must for festival season – I like this fringed number.
One of our very own national treasures, Imelda May, will be supporting Paolo Nutini at Marlay Park this year. Even when she’s belting out the tunes she retains her signature style of cinched-in waist and pencil skirt. It can’t be comfortable, but she makes it look easy.
I’m happy to follow her lead, though I might swap her Louboutins for low-heeled ankle boots if I wear a dress to a gig.
