While we’re all well used to the run around of day to day life, we’ll go for anything that may make our lives a little bit easier. If it means healthier too, it’s a bonus! As it’s January, the idea of meal prep may be on a lot of peoples minds. Spending a couple of hours cooking at the weekend can be a great idea. It frees up some time in your evenings and helps you to reach for healthier options too. Sounds good to us! Here are a few steps to make meal prepping a lot easier!
Step 1: Plan, Plan and Plan a Little More
“Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” There’s no getting around it, meal prep takes a bit of organisation and planning (check out our top tips for getting organised here). Once you know what to cook and when, make things a little easier on yourself, download a PDF of a meal plan template and simply slot in your meals. Also, include one of your favourite meals in your plan too. This gives you an extra little something to look forward to and may stop you from leading astray during the week.
Step 2: Start Off Smart
While you’re getting your meal plan organised, schedule in two/three hours over the weekend to cook the bulk of your meals for the week. It saves you from cooking when you get in in the evenings. Also, if your meals are ready to go then you’ll be less likely to order a takeaway too. We do think we deserve a treat every now and again though! Multi-task your cooking by taking advantage of a slow cooker, just throw in your ingredients and get to work on another meal. If you can, double the ingredients in your meals so that you have a couple of extra meals at the ready in the freezer. Go for quality containers that will last in the long run, this full 12 piece set is ideal or this smaller trio will always be handy to have.
Step 3: Top Tips
For those extra little tips and tricks, we’ve got you covered. Go crazy for spices and flavours, it’s an easy way to make simple meals full of flavour! For a quick breakfast on the go, blend your favourite smoothies in advance and freeze them in muffin cups. Then when you’re having ‘one of those’ mornings, you can just pop in your frozen smoothie ingredients into the blender. You’ll have your breakfast in no time! We’re loving this green breakfast smoothie. While you’re busy meal prepping, keep in mind to not go overboard. Ideally, keep three days worth of meals in the fridge and two days worth in the freezer.
