Pre match rituals are a vital part of any sport. We as a nation of Irish people are naturally superstitious, so we were interested to know what rituals or superstitions do Camogie stars have before their biggest games.

We asked Cork Camogie star Ashling Thompson at the launch of the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League semi final to let us in on a few of her personal rituals and routines!

Is there any specific routine that you follow on match day that you can tell us about?

I will always eat the same. Porridge to start off with, and then fruit and all that craic and then some eggs! Get the protein and the carbs.

What gets you psyched up on match day?

I used to be a music head, but sometimes, especially coming up to big games I watch games back. Last year, after losing to Kilkenny, I remember actually watching back, when we beat Galway the previous year because our work rate in that All-Ireland final was just phenomenal. It was like we were two different teams, in the space of 12 months, so just watching that final, was something I did I’d say 10 times last year!

Do you do any stretching or foam rolling before you head off?

Before I head off, yes I would do bands a lot. Mobility exercises and all that stuff.

Does your team have any match day rituals?

We always go to mass before any final. That’s what we do in Milford (Ashling’s club) as well, we are the exact same. We always go before every All-Ireland. I do not go to Mass ever, but I would never fail to miss a Mass before a game.

Would you be superstitious if you didn’t do these things?

Oh yes – that’s why I go to Mass!
