Anyone who has worked a 9-5 job will be familiar with the daily battle that is the afternoon slump.

No matter how much sleep we get or superfoods we eat, our energy levels still tend to start crashing by the time 3pm rolls around.

Now, the science behind the slump has been revealed and it turns out that it’s all down to our body clock!

“If you’re lacking in energy and motivation in the afternoon, don’t worry, you’re not on your own. Sleep is dictated by circadian rhythms also known as The Body Clock,” Francesca Bennet, Health and Wellbeing Programme Manager at AXA PPP Healthcare explained to Cosmopolitan.

“The urge to sleep increases towards 2pm, this is driven by a natural dip in circadian alerting system and an increase in sleep homeostasis drive.”

Bennet told the magazine that the dreaded crash kicks in about 12 hours after we’ve had our deepest sleep, which is typically between 2am and 3am.

“The Afternoon Slump is a normal feeling and has previously been associated with eating a big meal. This is not the direct cause, but may act as a contributing lifestyle factor on the sleep wake cycle. Poor lifestyle habits and insufficient quality and quantity of sleep can increase the feelings of tiredness and the Afternoon Slump,” she added.

So, don’t worry if you’re flagging a little this afternoon – you’re not alone!
