Although the real action obviously takes place on the pitch on game day, the prep work off the pitch is what gets the players there. Waterford camogie player Brianna O’Regan follows the same routine before each match, and for her success is dependent on this process.
Is there any one thing that you always do before a big match?
“Well I definitely follow the same routine. I have the same food at the same time. I always go for a puck around with my teammate Beth (Carton) the day before a match too. It just gets my head right.”
Does your team partake in any rituals before a game?
“A team talk. We always just tell each other to go out and try your best. We say play the same, be confident and support each other. Just encouraging words really.”
Then on match day what do you do?
“I do the same thing every time in terms of food and routine. I get up in the morning, I have scrambled egg and a cup of coffee, maybe some brown toast too. Then if the match is in the afternoon I’d have something else to eat, something light. Then before the match I foam roll and I do some band work.”
Would you be superstitious if you didn’t follow your routine?
“I’d feel very negative before a game if I didn’t do all of these things. If we lost then I’d think back wondering if I’d had the right food, or if I had stretched more maybe it would have been different. It would just play on my mind.”
