While we may start off with the best of intentions, our motivation can tend to wane after a while.
As a result, we’re always looking for tips to help us stay on the straight and narrow and the latest one doing the rounds definitely caught us by surprise.
A new study has suggested that rather than looking to shrinking celebrities for inspiration, women are most motivated by seeing their friends have success in changing their lifestyles.
As part of the research, one group of people were asked to connect with a normal ‘weight loss ambassador’ through a social network, while others followed a celebrity.
It was found that those who followed the ‘normal’ example were more successful in losing weight and achieved a higher weight loss than those in the celebrity category.
The researchers behind the study reported that those following the celebrity plan found a loss in motivation during the ‘plateau’ periods of weight loss but those who followed a friend or ‘normal’ role model were inspired to keep going.
“People want to see that positive influence. Understanding how social influence affects people’s participation in health programs can lead to better-designed wellness interventions,” explained Lora Cavuoto of the University of Buffalo.
So, if you’re kicking off a new healthy routine after Easter, make sure to look closer to home for inspiration!
