In the run-up to International Women’s Day, we asked some of our employees what exactly this day means to them and what it is that inspires them.
Meet Louise, who works in the Human Resources department in our Dublin office!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was very little, I wanted to be a teacher. But then in secondary school, I also really enjoyed business studies and I’ve always had a fascination with people and how they think, so working in HR seemed like a good way of combining both interests.
What was your first job?
I worked in our local newsagents – Dixi’s in Swords
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
When you’re struggling, ask for help, whether it’s in a business or personal context, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Getting that help can unlock frustration, indecision, barriers you face and ultimately, allows you to grow and move forward.
What is the best moment of your career so far?
In my last role, I had the opportunity to build HR from scratch – it was a very challenging but rewarding experience.
What women inspire you?
There are just so many to choose from…Michelle Obama is one that stands out for me – I’m full of admiration for her drive and passion, her clear sense of who she is and her values, and how she used her role in public life to advocate for women’s’ rights.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It’s a day that reminds the world that fairness, equality and balance for women are things that we need to continually strive for. It’s a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come but also highlights how much more we can do.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
What’s your favourite most empowering quote?
‘Awareness is the greatest agent of change’
Be sure to check back in on a daily basis in the run-up to International Women’s Day as we will be sharing another fabulous Littlewoods Ireland employee each day!
