In the run up to International Women’s Day, we asked some of our employees what exactly this day means to them and what it is that inspires them.
First up? Louise who works in the Finance Marketing department in our Dublin office!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a ballet dancer, I thought it was the most graceful and beautiful thing I had ever seen. I studied ballet when I was younger, I loved the costumes, the music and the buzz of the productions. At a friend’s birthday recently, you had to attend dressed as what you wished to be when you grew up, hence, I was a ballet dancer once again. Needless to say, there were a few twirls on the dancefloor!
What women inspire you?
To be honest, I am inspired by the women around me more than celebrities; my family, friends and work colleagues, each inspire me in their own ways. I watched footage of Selma Blair at the Vanity Fair Oscars party just yesterday, and she looked stunning. She used a cane to walk as she battled with MS symptoms. In the following interview, she highlighted her struggle with the disease and wished to bring exposure to the public. I admire women with this strength, courage and determination. I also admire women that are passionate about what they do in life, whatever that choice may be.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It’s a chance for a celebration (always good)- a glass of vino? Honestly, it’s important to highlight the achievements and progress woman have made over the years, to stand together and most importantly be supportive of one another.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I feel like I still need advice! I have always tried to follow these beliefs, when I was younger and now, ‘Always treat everyone equally no matter who they are, be kind, and stand up for what you believe in -even if this makes you unpopular.’
What’s your favourite empowering quote?
My favourite quote has always been ‘you either laugh or cry’ I believe this quote (as I say it) is incomplete- but I prefer it this way.
Be sure to check back in on a daily basis in the run-up to International Women’s Day as we will be sharing another fabulous Littlewoods Ireland employee each day!
